avast is ideal for gamers, it has silent updates (easy to set option) and even a gaming/fullscreen mode where it runs completely silently.

Avast has an issue where it interfears with most USB keyboards. It is well documented on thier web site. It has had that issue for years. I had an issue with Avast ignoring a lot of viruses, Avira caught ten when I switch over from Avast.
Anyway; Due to recent developments (the bait & switch AV bug). The OPs best bet is MSE, which is available for 32Bit XP SP3, Vista & Windows7. I have heard that Microsoft is dropping 32bit support for Vista & Windows7 but that is unconfirmed at this point in time.
